Can I Do a Juice Cleanse While Breastfeeding?

It is always best to speak to your health care practitioner about any of these decisions, but we do not recommend full juice cleanses while pregnant or breastfeeding.

It can however be an absolutely amazing time to be drinking juice as part of your balanced day to day diet. With all the nutrients and precious electrolyte filled plant water, there are huge benefits in milk quality, milk production, and mama's overall energy and health. We could all use all the help we can get postpartum. Your hydration will be optimized and so will your nutrient intake! I personally see a big difference in my energy and my milk production when I include more juice, and I hear the same from so many others in our community.

Rejuvenate and Energize Your Body While Nursing

As a new mother, it's important to prioritize your health and well-being, especially if you're breastfeeding. One way to do this is by incorporating nutrient-rich foods and beverages into your diet, such as fresh juice. While juice cleanses can be popular for detoxification and weight loss, it's important to discuss any major dietary changes with your healthcare practitioner, particularly if you're breastfeeding.

As mentioned earlier, full juice cleanses are not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because rapid weight loss and detoxification can release toxins into your bloodstream, which can be passed onto your baby through breastmilk. However, drinking juice as part of a balanced diet can be incredibly beneficial for milk quality, milk production, and overall energy and health.

Get the Vitamins and Minerals Needed for Lactation

Freshly made juice contains a variety of vitamins and minerals that can support lactation and boost your immune system. For example, leafy greens such as spinach and kale are rich in calcium, which is important for bone health, and vitamin C, which can help your body absorb iron from plant-based foods. Fruits such as berries and citrus fruits are also great sources of vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help protect your body from oxidative stress.

In addition to providing important nutrients, drinking juice can also help with hydration. Breastfeeding can be dehydrating, so it's important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Juices are a great way to stay hydrated, as they contain electrolytes such as potassium and sodium, which help regulate fluid balance in the body.

It's also important to note that while juice can be a healthy addition to your diet, it should not be relied upon as a meal replacement. Breastfeeding requires additional calories and nutrients, so it's important to eat a balanced diet that includes healthy fats, protein, and complex carbohydrates.

Furthermore, sudden and extreme dietary changes can be stressful on your body, which can ultimately affect your milk supply. Gradual changes and moderation are key, so consider incorporating one or two glasses of juice into your daily routine instead of replacing all your meals with juice.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, incorporating fresh juice into your daily diet can provide important nutrients and support lactation while breastfeeding. However, it's important to discuss any major dietary changes with your healthcare practitioner, as well as continue to eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of healthy foods. Remember, taking care of yourself is essential for taking care of your little one.

We hope this helps mama!

Big love,
